We've all heard it before: "Don't open attachments from people you don't know."
Or, "Don't plug your computer into other devices."
But what happens when you're in a hurry? What if there's no one around to help? What if you need to find something quickly, or log on to make an important school project?
We think it's time we start talking about online safety for kids. Because while the internet may seem like it's a place where anyone can go, especially kids (who might not understand why they shouldn't go anywhere they want), it's also a place where they can get hurt—and where they could potentially get into trouble with the law.
So how do you keep your little ones safe online? Here are some tips:
1) Get them involved. The more involved your child is in this process, the better off they'll be. Ask them questions and get them involved in choosing passwords and creating security settings that make sense for their age level. This will help them understand the importance of protecting themselves from strangers and bad things happening because of who they allow access to their accounts and devices
2) Set up a password bank for them. Encourage them to create a bank of passwords that are only used for accessing the internet or specific websites. This will help them develop good habits around logging in and out of those sites so they don't forget it!
3) Teach them about cyberbullying and cyberstalking. Talk to your child about what these terms mean, then show them examples of bullying or stalking on social media platforms.
